Designer and art director

Catarina Sampaio is a Visual Communication Designer and Art Director based in Lisbon, who specializes in film and broadcast marketing.


She has worked in the film industry for over 10 years, including on several productions by established filmmakers, both Portuguese and International, such as Wim Wenders, David Cronenberg, Fernando Lopes, António-Pedro Vasconcelos, Raúl Ruiz, José Fonseca e Costa, Tiago Guedes, Robert Schwentke, Valeria Sarmiento, Andrzej Zulawski, Denis Berry, João Mário Grilo, Mário Barroso, João Nuno Pinto, Hugo Vieira da Silva, amongst many others. 


Her work has received several distinctions, among them the award for Best Film Poster from the Portuguese Film Academy.

Catarina graduated in Graphic Design and Multimedia Technologies, at the School of Art and Design of Caldas da Rainha; has an M.A. in Communication Design and New Media, from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon; a Post-Graduation degree in New Media and Web Practices, from FCSH - Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Nova University of Lisbon; and specialized in Advertising Creativity, at Restart - Institute of Creativity, Arts and New Technologies. She is currently a PhD candidate in Communication Design, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon.


She started working in advertising and worked as an art director at Euro RSCG Worldwide/ Havas, but soon after trying her hand as a graphic designer for arthouse film productions, with the Franco-Portuguese producer Paulo Branco, she decided to change her focus, specializing in film marketing.


Since then, she has gained experience in all fields related to communication design in the film industry, from production to distribution, exhibition, international sales, festivals, television and VOD, where her design practice ranges in a diversity of media, from print to digital. Currently, she works as a designer and art director and runs her independent design cabinet.


She is also a researcher at CIEBA - Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts and has had research papers published in scientific journals and artistic work presented in several international art and design conferences and exhibitions.
