Poster and visual identity design for the film programme “Late Shimizu”, dedicated to the remarkable Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Shimizu.

A contemporary of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu, and regarded as a genius by both, Shimizu directed more than 166 feature films over the course of 35 years, yet his work remains far less known internationally than that of his peers.

This programme offers a rare opportunity to rediscover his cinema, including three films never commercially released in Portugal.

“Late Shimizu” continues a series of film programmes dedicated to Japanese filmmakers that I’ve had the pleasure of designing for The Stone and the Plot — an ongoing collaboration focused on bringing new visual identities to curated retrospectives.
